What to see and do in Basardilla

Basardilla
Village
Basardilla is a village of about 136 inhabitants situated on the western slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama, between the Pirón and Polendos rivers, 15 kilometres from the Segovian capital, within the former Community of City and Land of Segovia. The village stands at 1,091 metres and the second stage of the Camino de San Frutos passes through its municipal area. Its name is cited as Val Sardiella in 1247, and could mean 'valley of the earring' or come from the Latin vallem and exsarritare, 'to clear scrubland'. It preserves the Romanesque church of San Bartolomé, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1994, with two semicircular apses; it also holds a calvary of fourteen granite crosses and the council's corral.
Church of San Bartolomé
Monument
The church of San Bartolomé, in Basardilla (Segovia), was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 12 May 1994. Romanesque in origin, it has been altered by later works: it consists of a nave and a lateral body that today forms a second, parallel nave, separated from the main one by transverse arches. It preserves the two Romanesque apses that close off both naves, with decorated cornices and corbels; the main one, taller, has a round-arched window above columns with decorated capitals, now blocked up. The south doorway is also Romanesque, with a round arch and three archivolts decorated with rosettes. The four-stage tower dominates the west front, of exposed rubble masonry with ashlar at the corners. It is surrounded by low granite houses built directly on the bedrock.
The gacería of the cattle traders
Curiosity
In Basardilla remnants survive of the gacería, the jargon created by the cattle dealers and threshing-sledge makers of the Cantalejo area so as to understand one another without their customers grasping the deal.
