What to see and do in La Lastrilla

La Lastrilla
Village
La Lastrilla is a municipality of about 4,780 inhabitants adjoining Segovia, physically joined to the capital, from which it broke away in 1834, having before that been one of its suburbs from which it finally split in 1889. Its origin is thought to lie in an outlying post for collecting tolls on entry to the city, around which a population centre would have formed during the Castilian colonisation, between the 10th and 12th centuries, with people coming from the valleys of Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarre. The municipality also has a prehistoric past: at the Las Zumaqueras site, remains have been found of a Bronze Age settlement dating from around 1200 BC. The Camino de San Frutos passes through its municipal area, and on the last Saturday of May it celebrates the Día de la Cacera Mayor.
The Way of San Frutos
Activity
Through La Lastrilla passes the Camino de San Frutos, a pilgrimage and hiking route linking Segovia cathedral with the ermita de San Frutos, in the Hoces del Río Duratón nature park, where the tombs of the saint and his siblings San Valentín and Santa Engracia are kept. Tradition places the three siblings living in Segovia in the 7th century; after the death of their parents they withdrew to the Hoces to lead an ascetic life and built a monastic complex there, of which the Romanesque building crowning one of the heights of the area survives. The municipality also preserves the Baroque church of San Juan Bautista.
