What to see and do in Espirdo

Espirdo
Village
Espirdo is a municipality of the Community of City and Land of Segovia, in the Sexmo de San Lorenzo, located 8 kilometres from the capital, on the plateau of the western slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama, through which the Ciguiñuela river runs. Documented since 1086 as Spiritu, and in 1247 as Spiritu de Ruviales after the nearby town now vanished, it took its present name in the 16th century. Besides Espirdo, it is made up of the hamlets of La Higuera and Tizneros, with about 1,610 inhabitants in total; it functions largely as a dormitory municipality of the city of Segovia. Through its municipal area, between the deserted settlements of Veladíez and Ruviales, passes the Camino de San Frutos. On the outskirts, the Romanesque ermita of Nuestra Señora de Veladiez is preserved, with a round-arched portico and a two-bell gable.
Hermitage of Veladíez
Monument
The ermita of Nuestra Señora de Veladíez stands on a hilltop lookout 1,400 metres southwest of Espirdo, in the former deserted hamlet of Veladíez, from which the remains of at least 51 Visigothic graves excavated in 1944 survive, along with the oral tradition placing the burial of the Visigothic king Witerico there. The place name Vela Díaz already appears documented in 1247, in a parchment from the Segovia cathedral archive. The building, Romanesque and single-naved, in good condition, preserves a splayed window to the west, a corbelled cornice to the north and its characteristic round-arched porch topped by a two-bell gable; its romería, on the first Sunday of May, is the oldest festival in the municipality.
The legend of the Three Sisters
Curiosity
Three hermitages aligned in Espirdo, Basardilla and Collado Hermoso feed the story of the three daughters of a king who were separated on three hilltops so that they would not quarrel, and who communicated with one another from their respective lookouts.
