What to see and do in Santo Domingo de Pirón

Santo Domingo de Pirón
Village
Santo Domingo de Pirón is a village in the province of Segovia, on the western slope of the Macizo de Peñalara, in the Sierra de Guadarrama, at 1,072 metres above sea level and beside the Pirón river, a tributary of the Cega. It belonged to the Sexmo de San Lorenzo of the former Community of City and Land of Segovia and today has about 51 inhabitants. The Camino de San Frutos passes through the village. Its church, dedicated to Santo Domingo de Silos, preserves a semicircular Romanesque-period apse with carved corbels and a bell-gable that is never without a stork's nest. In the deserted settlement of las Puertas stands the Rancho Alfaro, one of the province's most important shearing houses, whose construction was commissioned around 1750 by José Alfaro.
Rancho Alfaro
Monument
An 18th-century wool-washing and shearing shed, built around 1750 by José Alfaro, secretary to Ferdinand VI, on the site of the deserted medieval hamlet of Puertas, documented since 1247. Alfaro completely remodelled it as a ranch for washing and shearing transhumant merino wool, beside the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental, the drove road that linked Soria with Badajoz, near the Pirón river; it had four large tanks and the chimney of a furnace that heated the water used to wash the wool cold and hot before it was exported to Europe. It became one of the most important ranches in the country, although production declined and it was abandoned at the end of the 19th century. In private hands and without legal protection, its state of semi-ruin led it in 2024 onto Hispania Nostra's Lista Roja del Patrimonio.
El Tuerto de Pirón
Curiosity
A 19th-century bandit born in this area, he robbed the rich and raided churches and roads until he became a popular hero; from him came the saying that in Santo Domingo de Pirón there was a thief in every house. His name was Fernando Delgado Sanz (Santo Domingo de Pirón, 30 May 1846 - Valencia, 5 July 1914), and he received his nickname from a cloud that had covered one of his eyes since childhood, which he hid with a patch; he operated in the Sierra de Guadarrama and in the basins of the Pirón and Lozoya rivers, and is considered the last bandit of the sierra. He learned to read, write and do arithmetic, something exceptional for the time. His criminal career began in 1866, when his former sweetheart married another man under family pressure; after his death, his exploits became popular legend.
