Hontanares de Eresma
Village
Hontanares de Eresma is a municipality in the province of Segovia, in the Campiña Segoviana district, with about 1,680 inhabitants and one hamlet, La Estación. Its name, already cited in 1247 as Fontanares, comes from the Latin fontana aqua, 'spring water', and alludes to a place with many springs; until the reform of municipal naming in 1916 the village was simply called Hontanares. In its municipal area, remains have been found of a settlement dating from between 4000 and 7000 years before Christ, as well as a late-Roman and Visigothic site next to the old cemetery. Its Museo Cochaca brings together more than a thousand ethnographic items, and in a house in the village La alcaldesa de Hontanares was written, the work that opened the Teatro Juan Bravo in Segovia in 1919.
Eresma Valley Greenway
Activity
The Camino Natural Vía Verde del Valle del Eresma follows the route of the old Segovia-Medina del Campo railway line, built at the end of the 19th century as an alternative to the Madrid-Hendaye line; opened in 1884, it maintained modest traffic along its 87 kilometres through the Eresma valley and the Castilian countryside until its closure in September 1993 for lack of profitability. Two decades later the route was restored as a 73.3-kilometre greenway, integrated into the Red de Caminos Naturales: in 2014 the stretch between Segovia and Yanguas de Eresma came into service, and five years later it had been restored as far as Olmedo. The Hontanares station, in service between 1884 and 1993, is preserved today as heritage.

Nature
The river corridor brings together oak woods, riverside groves, ash stands and pinewoods where hoopoes, red kites, herons, black vulture, griffon vulture and otter have been recorded, a diversity uncommon so close to the provincial capital.
