Garcillán
Village
Garcillán is a municipality of around 513 inhabitants in the province of Segovia, situated in the campiña segoviana and crossed by the Eresma river. In the mid-19th century it had 409 inhabitants, according to the Diccionario de Madoz, and its population grew until reaching its highest density in 1950, a year after which the birth rate fell and many residents emigrated to Madrid, the Basque Country and Segovia itself; in recent years it has held steady and even increased thanks to the arrival of young families. It lives mainly off rain-fed cereals, barley and wheat, and off irrigated crops of sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables. It celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the 14th of September.
