Eresma Valley Greenway Activity · Hontanares de Eresma, Alfoz de Segovia, Segovia The Camino Natural Vía Verde del Valle del Eresma follows the route of the old Segovia-Medina del Campo railway line, built at the end of the 19th century as an alternative to the Madrid-Hendaye line; opened in 1884, it maintained modest traffic along its 87 kilometres through the Eresma valley and the Castilian countryside until its closure in September 1993 for lack of profitability. Two decades later the route was restored as a 73.3-kilometre greenway, integrated into the Red de Caminos Naturales: in 2014 the stretch between Segovia and Yanguas de Eresma came into service, and five years later it had been restored as far as Olmedo. The Hontanares station, in service between 1884 and 1993, is preserved today as heritage. Photo: Discasto (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Hontanares de Eresma
