What to see and do in Los Huertos

Los Huertos
Village
Los Huertos is a Segovian village of the Campiña, in the flood plain of the Eresma river and on the Madrid Camino de Santiago, about 10 kilometres from the capital. Documented since the Middle Ages as Sancta María de los Huertos, a name that was shortened to its present form at the end of the 16th century, it belonged from its founding to the Community of Town and Land of Segovia, within the Sexmo de Santa Eulalia. Its municipal area contains the deserted settlements of Carrascal de Gumiel and of Gumiel or San Pedrillo, the latter already cited in the mid-13th century, of which only the ruined ermita remains. Every 17 August it celebrates the Día de la Quema, carrying the Virgin up from her ermita in memory of a fire that almost destroyed it centuries ago. It now has 173 inhabitants.
The Day of the Burning
Activity
Every 17 August the village celebrates the Día de la Quema, a festival that recalls a historic fire which devastated the settlement; the municipality also lies on the Camino de Santiago de Madrid and opened a pilgrims' hostel in 2017.
