Cerezal de Peñahorcada
Village
Cerezal de Peñahorcada is a hamlet in Salamanca of about 64 inhabitants on the edge of the Arribes, whose name —"cerezal" means "cerezo" (cherry tree) in the Leonese language— points to the medieval custom of naming repopulated villages after trees or plants. It was founded in the 12th century by Ferdinand II of León, who granted it to the Order of Santiago, under whose lordship it remained until 1873. On its territory rises the teso de Peñahorcada, the highest point in the district at 836 metres, within the Meseta Ibérica transboundary biosphere reserve. Its church of San Marcos, of neoclassical appearance, keeps the doorway arch from the old Gothic building and holds an 18th-century altarpiece and a 16th-century embossed cross; the main feast is celebrated on 25 April.
