What to see and do in Barruecopardo

Barruecopardo
Village
Barruecopardo is a town in the comarca of Vitigudino, in the province of Salamanca, with around 409 inhabitants; its territory, which includes the depopulated hamlet of Santa Ana, lies in the Arribes ecoregion, between the Duero and Huebra rivers, and forms an important gateway to the Arribes del Duero Nature Park. Its name comes from “barrueco”, a loose or isolated boulder, abundant in the area, and from its brown (“pardo”) colour. The village stands 730 metres above sea level, on flat ground that, towards the south, near the río Huebra, gives way to great rocky granite cliffs that plunge sharply down to around 300 metres, known as the arribes of the Huebra. Its recent history was shaped by tungsten mines, opened in step with the two world wars and active until 1985.
The arribes of the Huebra
Nature
Some three kilometres to the south of the village, the river Huebra becomes entrenched in great granite cliffs that descend to close to 300 metres of altitude. It is one of the most vertiginous stretches of Las Arribes before the mouth on the Duero.
The wolfram mines of Barruecopardo
Curiosity
The village opened and closed its wolfram mines to the rhythm of the world wars: 1917, 1940 and a working that lasted until 1985. The mineral, strategic for armour steel, left here on the way to the factories of the north.
