What to see and do in Puertas

Puertas
Village
Puertas is a municipality in Salamanca province, in the comarca of Vitigudino, in the sub-comarca of La Ramajería, bringing together the settlements of Puertas, Cerezal de Puertas, El Groo and Manceras alongside the banks of the río Vado, at an altitude of 786 metres and beneath the heights of Cabeza del Horno and Monte Alto, with around 66 inhabitants. Founded in the 12th century as part of the repopulation by Ferdinand II of León, it was placed within the Alfoz de Ledesma under the name Sancta María de Cabeça de Porcas, already documented in 1265 together with its dependent hamlets. Its surroundings of holm oaks and oaks are home to varied wildlife, from eagles and vultures to the sarda, an endemic species only recently described. Its economy depends entirely on livestock, above all of the morucha and Charolais breeds.
