What to see and do in Villar de Peralonso

Villar de Peralonso
Village
Villar de Peralonso is a municipality in the Tierra de Vitigudino, in the province of Salamanca, which brings together the localities of Sahelicejos, Sardón de los Álamos and Villar itself, with 212 inhabitants spread across three settlements. Its name would join 'villar', meaning village in the Asturian-Leonese language, with that of Pero Alonso, who probably led the medieval repopulation of the place under the council of Ledesma; settlement, however, is much older, as shown by the dolmen of Sahelicejos, whose burial chamber still stands. In the 1950s a uranium mine was opened in the municipality, active until the 1970s, and for much of that century Villar de Peralonso was also a center of pottery production. Between 2000 and 2018 it lost 44% of its population.
