Villarmuerto
Village
Villarmuerto is a hamlet of about 38 inhabitants that shares a municipality with Villargordo, in the Tierra de Vitigudino, Salamanca comarca of Vitigudino. Its name derives from villar, 'village' in the Leonese language, and it is documented in the 13th century as Villarmorto. Founded through the repopulation by the Leonese kings between the 10th and 12th centuries, it was then placed within the alfoz of Ledesma, in the Kingdom of León; with the creation of the present-day provinces in 1833 it became part of Salamanca, within the Leonese Region, and in 1844 of the judicial district of Vitigudino. Between 2000 and 2018 the municipality lost 30% of its population, down to the current 43 inhabitants, divided between the two settlements of Villarmuerto and Villargordo. It preserves as its main monument the parish church of San Cipriano.
