Olmedo de Camaces
Village
Olmedo de Camaces is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of Vitigudino and the sub-comarca of El Abadengo, situated in the northwest of the province, about 95 kilometres from the provincial capital. Its extensive territory, of 90 km², encompasses, besides the village itself, the depopulated hamlets of Arévalo, Fuenlabrada, Hernandinos and Tunja, and today has around 87 inhabitants, after losing more than 40% of its population between 2000 and 2018. The village was resettled by the Leonese kings in the 12th and 13th centuries, came under the management of the Order of the Temple and, after its dissolution, passed to the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo. Its name recalls the former abundance of elms: until recently, the main square kept the very tree that gave it its name, 250 years old, felled by a tornado.
