La Vídola
Village
La Vídola is a village in the Salamanca comarca of Vitigudino, in the sub-comarca of La Ramajería, with around 95 inhabitants across 29.64 km². Its place name, of uncertain origin, already appears as “Bidola” in 1265 and evolves through forms such as “La Vídula” or “La Bidola” until settling as “La Vídola” in the 17th century; some link it to the Latin “vetula” (old woman). The area may have been inhabited by the Vettones, who left a barely visible castro at El Castillo, but the present-day village arises from the Leonese repopulation of the 10th to 12th centuries, within the Alfoz de Ledesma. Its Inmaculada church preserves medieval frescoes. The landscape is a rolling peneplain with scattered oaks and plots enclosed by stone walls, the “cortinas”, and semi-extensive livestock farming sustains the local economy.
