La Peña
Village
La Peña is a hamlet in the comarca of Vitigudino, in the northwest of Salamanca province, 88 kilometres from the provincial capital, with 69 inhabitants and part of its territory within the Arribes del Duero Nature Park. It owes its name to La Peña Gorda, a bornhardt, or episyenite rock mass, 41 metres high and 71 metres in diameter, which formed around 320 million years ago as granite three kilometres underground, until erosion and successive hydrothermal alterations let it emerge as an inselberg, today regarded as the municipality's greatest attraction. In 13th-century documents the village appears recorded as Penalfange, “Peña Alfange”, from the Arabic alfanje, meaning sabre, and its founding dates back to the repopulations by the Leonese kings in the early Middle Ages.
