Cerralbo
Village
Cerralbo is a village of about 105 inhabitants in the Vitigudino district, in the El Abadengo sub-district, in the province of Salamanca, whose name —from "cerro" (hill) and "blanco" (white)— gives its title to the marquisate of Cerralbo. In the 12th century it came, along with the rest of the Abadengo, under the Order of the Temple; after its dissolution in 1311 it depended on the bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo until 1372, when the town became a lordship of the Pacheco family, raised to a marquisate in 1533 by Charles I. The 17th holder of the marquisate, Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, bequeathed the Cerralbo Museum to Madrid; in 1920 the residents bought the municipal territory for 1,250,000 pesetas, until then owned by the marquises. It keeps the castle raised by the Pachecos in the 14th-15th centuries and a 16th-century Franciscan monastery.
