Villasbuenas
Village
Villasbuenas is a municipality in the Vitigudino district, in the northwest of the province of Salamanca, 86 kilometres from the capital, within the La Ramajería sub-district; its territory brings together the village itself and the hamlet of Barreras, with 158 inhabitants. Documented since 1265 as Villabonos —the name from which the current one derives—, it was founded in the 12th century by the repopulation of Ferdinand II of León and remained a lordship of the Order of Santiago until 1873. A Bronze Age site and several Roman steles have been documented within its territory, one of them dedicated to the pre-Roman deity Ciliborcae, linked to springs and waters. In Barreras, around 1788, Enrique Störr found gem-quality citrine quartz known as the "false topaz of Villasbuenas"; the mine was reopened in 1940 to extract rock crystal and closed in the 1960s.
