Guadramiro
Village
Guadramiro is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the comarca of La Ramajería, judicial district of Vitigudino. Its name, documented since the 10th century, joins the Arabic word wadi (river or valley) with that of Ramiro II of León, who reconquered the area after the Battle of Simancas in the year 939, moving the Christian frontier from the Duero to the Tormes. It belonged to the land of Ledesma and went on to become the capital of the Lordship of Guadramiro, held by the Maldonado-Ormaza family, under the jurisdiction of the count of Ledesma. With around 120 inhabitants, the village is today dominated by the Guadramiro tower, a 23-metre ashlar fortification declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), with Gothic pinnacles and four gargoyles. Diego de Torres Villarroel set one of his plays here.
