What to see and do in Villaflores

Villaflores
Village
Villaflores is a Salamancan locality in the comarca of the Tierra de Peñaranda, in the sub-comarca of las Guareñas, with about 255 inhabitants divided between the main settlement and the deserted villages of Mazores Nuevo, Mazores Viejo and Morquera. Its founding goes back to the medieval repopulation by the kings of León, when it was placed in the cuarto of Villoria under the name Velacos, which it kept until the 13th century. With the creation of the provinces in 1833 it passed to that of Salamanca. Its parish is dedicated to San Martín, and the far-right politician Ramón Ruiz Alonso was born in the village in 1903, remembered for his role in the arrest and subsequent murder of the poet Federico García Lorca.
The church of San Martín of Villaflores
Monument
The parish church of San Martín is the main building of Villaflores, a Salamancan municipality that in the 13th century was called Velacos and whose territory includes three deserted settlements: Mazores Nuevo, Mazores Viejo and Morquera. From this locality comes a panel of the Coronation of the Virgin, a work by Fernando Gallego, now kept in the Diocesan Museum of Salamanca.
The birth of Ramón Ruiz Alonso
Historical milestone
In 1903 Ramón Ruiz Alonso was born in the village, a far-right politician whose figure went down in history for his direct involvement in the arrest and subsequent murder of the poet Federico García Lorca in 1936. Born on 14 November, a typographer by trade, he was a deputy in the Cortes during the Second Republic as a prominent member of the CEDA; his detractors nicknamed him “el obrero amaestrado”. During his time in Granada he had poor relations with the left, working-class sectors and even the local leaders of the Granada Falange themselves. After the outbreak of the civil war he joined the insurgent forces and took part in repression efforts. He died in 1978.
