What to see and do in El Campo de Peñaranda

El Campo de Peñaranda
Village
El Campo de Peñaranda is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of the Tierra de Peñaranda. Founded during the medieval repopulation by the kings of León, it was called simply El Campo until 1833, when it took the name of the head town of its partido, Peñaranda de Bracamonte, to distinguish itself from other Salamancan campos such as El Campo de Ledesma. With about 240 inhabitants, it encloses within its 45 square kilometres the deserted villages of Aldeayuste and Riolobos. Its square is dominated by the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, plain brick outside but Renaissance inside, with three naves and fluted-shaft columns, the work of Martín Navarro between 1560 and 1570; its tower and sacristy, with stepped-corbel cornices, were built by Juan Burgueño in 1594.
The church of the Assumption over the square
Monument
Dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, the church stands on the now paved square and gives it height and centrality; it is the building that orders the houses of a municipality of little more than two hundred and forty inhabitants.

Nature
The municipal district covers 45.20 square kilometres of cereal-growing countryside in which two former settlements, today vanished, Aldeayuste and Riolobos, dissolve; the suffix «de Peñaranda» was added so as not to confuse it with El Campo de Ledesma.
