What to see and do in Palaciosrubios

Palaciosrubios
Village
Palaciosrubios is a village of 285 inhabitants in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of the Tierra de Peñaranda and the sub-comarca of Las Guareñas, crossed by the Guareña channel and the Cañipón stream, with an economy based on dry-farmed cereals and irrigated crops such as sugar beet, potatoes or maize. It was founded during the medieval repopulation by the kings of León, and in the 13th century it was called Palacios Ruvios; its name was changed to Palaciosrubios under Francoism to distinguish it from the homonymous municipality in Ávila. It was the birthplace of Juan López de Palacios Rubios (1450-1524), jurist and adviser to the Catholic Monarchs. In 1637 its residents bought the title of villa from Philip IV, and to this day they are still called beleguinos, a demonym of uncertain origin.
The jurist Juan López de Palacios Rubios
Historical milestone
Juan López de Vivero was born in Palaciosrubios in 1450, known by the name of his home village as Juan López de Palacios Rubios, one of the most prominent jurists at the court of the Catholic Monarchs. A professor at Salamanca and Valladolid, he was an oidor of the Valladolid chancery, a member of the Council of the Indies and ambassador in Rome, and from 1504 he was part of the Council of Castile, where he took part in drafting the Leyes de Toro of 1505. He is known above all as the ideologue of the doctrine that legally justified the conquest of America, and as the author, in 1512, of the Requerimiento, the text that conquistadors were required to read to the indigenous peoples to claim the Crown's sovereignty. He died in 1524, at the end of a career that made him one of the most influential jurists of his time.
The shots of 28 September 1931
Historical milestone
On 28 September 1931 the Civil Guard opened fire without warning on a group of day laborers celebrating in the village the expected end of their strike. Four people died and the Workers' Federation called a general strike across the province the following day.
The granary of the rubión wheat
Curiosity
Before the Renaissance, palacio designated the cilla or grain store, and rubio in the Middle Ages was equivalent to red, as well as naming a variety of wheat, the rubión; the place name would therefore allude to the store of rubión wheat or to the red brick cilla.
