What to see and do in Cantalapiedra

Cantalapiedra
Village
Cantalapiedra is a locality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of the Tierra de Peñaranda and the sub-comarca of Las Guareñas, with about 885 inhabitants spread over a single settlement of 71 square kilometres. It was a walled stronghold of the Kingdom of León, and in 1136 Alfonso VII gave it to the bishop of Salamanca; of that wall only the Dean's tower still stands. It also preserves the church of Santa María del Castillo, declared a Monumento Nacional (Spain's former national heritage designation, predecessor of today's BIC) in 1931. Its name, cited in 1136 as Campum de Petra, lies in a frontier strip between the old kingdoms of León and Castile dotted with place names bearing the root canta-, which according to some scholars alluded to frontier or battle sites rather than to farmland.
The church of Santa María del Castillo
Monument
Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) on 3 June 1931, it preserves Romanesque apses from the period of the resettlement and a Mudéjar body crowned by a great bell-gable tower. It presides over the main square and the medieval plan of the town.
The tower of El Deán
Monument
The only surviving tower of the wall built to defend the eastern frontier of the Kingdom of León, it is constructed in rubble masonry with brick reinforcements at the corners. It owes its name to the deans of the cathedral of Salamanca.
The donation to the Bishop of Salamanca
Historical milestone
Resettled, fortified and walled by the Leonese kings as a stronghold against Castile, the town was donated in 1136 by Alfonso VII to the bishop of Salamanca as an ecclesiastical lordship, on which it depended for centuries.
