What to see and do in Zorita de la Frontera

Zorita de la Frontera
Village
Zorita de la Frontera is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of the Tierra de Peñaranda, with about 140 inhabitants, whose territory includes the deserted village of Aldehuela de las Flores. It bears this second name for having lain on the boundary between León and Castile in the 12th and 13th centuries, when it was called Çurita and was part of the cuarto of Villoria, within the jurisdiction of Salamanca and the Kingdom of León. Its church of San Miguel Arcángel, with three naves — two from the 15th century and the southern one from the 16th — combines brick, rammed earth and ashlar, and covers the central nave with a 15th-century Mudéjar artesonado ceiling; it also preserves a wooden Plateresque gallery and a Churrigueresque high altarpiece from the late 17th century, along with four other Baroque altarpieces from the mid-18th century.

Çurita, the blue dove of the border
Curiosity
The place name may have an Arabic origin with the meaning of blue dove, and appears as Çurita in medieval documents; the addition of «de la Frontera» recalls that in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the village marked the Leonese boundary against Castile.
