Paradinas de San Juan
Village
Paradinas de San Juan is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the Tierra de Peñaranda, born of the medieval repopulation by the kings of León to reinforce the frontier facing Castile. In 1113 Queen Urraca I granted it to the Order of Saint John, which incorporated it into the Encomienda of the Guareña and from which it took its current byname, officially adopted in 1919. In 1183 it hosted, in its palace facing the church, the Cortes at which Ferdinand II of León and Alfonso VIII of Castile negotiated the Treaty of Fresno-Lavandera, finally signed in Castronuño in 1185. It has around 380 inhabitants and covers a territory of 35 square kilometres. It honours San Pedro Apóstol on 29 and 30 June and celebrates in August the pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora del Hinojal.
The pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora del Hinojal
Activity
The pilgrimage festival of the patron saint is held on the last weekend of August. Traditionally it took place on 8 September, but it was moved so that more residents and the sons of the village who return during the summer could attend.
