What to see and do in Cantaracillo

Cantaracillo
Village
Cantaracillo, with about 190 inhabitants, belonged from the medieval repopulation to the Community of Villa and Tierra de Ávila, in the sexmo of San Vicente, and did not pass to the province of Salamanca until 1833; in the mid-19th century it had 442 registered residents. Its name, documented as Cantarziello since 1250, refers to an old Campo de Arziello situated on the medieval frontier between Castile and León, an area of frequent military skirmishes where, as in neighbouring Cantalapiedra, a fortified tower was built; hence some scholars interpret these Canta- place names as references to battlefields or defensive lines rather than to farmland. Its church is dedicated to la Asunción.
Campo de Arziello
Curiosity
Documented as Cantarziello since 1250, the name comes from a Campo de Arziello, with arziello as an old diminutive of arco: it would allude to some archaeological remain that caught the attention of the settlers of this frontier between León and Castile.
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
Monument
The parish church presides over a town that belonged from the medieval resettlement to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Ávila, in the sexmo of San Vicente, and which came to have a fortified tower because of its frontier position.
