What to see and do in Flores de Ávila

Flores de Ávila
Village
Flores de Ávila is a municipality in the district of La Moraña, in the province of Ávila, with about 262 inhabitants, which includes the hamlet of El Ajo. Surrounded by cereal steppe, it preserves traditional adobe and rammed-earth houses alongside new buildings, and near the village rises La Atalaya, a hill of 935 metres from which the district can be seen as far as the provinces of Valladolid and Salamanca. Its main monument is the church of Nuestra Señora Santa María del Castillo, built on a hermitage of mudéjar origin, from which it preserves the bell-gable tower and the doorway of the south wall; it houses a large Renaissance main altarpiece, carved and polychrome, begun in 1525. It celebrates San Zoilo on 27 June and was once called, less fortunately, Vellacos.

Monument
The church, from the turn of the fifteenth to the sixteenth century and built over a twelfth-century Romanesque hermitage whose remains are still in the walls, holds a sixteenth-century altarpiece carved in estofado and polychrome wood as wide and tall as the central nave.
