The jurist Juan López de Palacios Rubios Historical milestone · Palaciosrubios, Tierra de Peñaranda, Salamanca Image of Palaciosrubios, not of the place itself. Juan López de Vivero was born in Palaciosrubios in 1450, known by the name of his home village as Juan López de Palacios Rubios, one of the most prominent jurists at the court of the Catholic Monarchs. A professor at Salamanca and Valladolid, he was an oidor of the Valladolid chancery, a member of the Council of the Indies and ambassador in Rome, and from 1504 he was part of the Council of Castile, where he took part in drafting the Leyes de Toro of 1505. He is known above all as the ideologue of the doctrine that legally justified the conquest of America, and as the author, in 1512, of the Requerimiento, the text that conquistadors were required to read to the indigenous peoples to claim the Crown's sovereignty. He died in 1524, at the end of a career that made him one of the most influential jurists of his time. 1450 Photo: julioje79@gmail.com (CC BY 3.0) What to see and do in Palaciosrubios
