What to see and do in Alconada

Alconada
Village
Alconada is a municipality in the Tierra de Peñaranda, in Salamanca, with about 130 inhabitants across two population centres and 21.26 km². It lies at 820 metres in a shallow valley on the left bank of the Almar river, which crosses it from east to west. Born as Arconada during the medieval León repopulation, it remained subject to Alba de Tormes within the Kingdom of León; the place name, documented as Archonata in 1244, probably derives from arcón, 'boundary stone dividing lands', and evolved into Alconada through association with the halcón (falcon). With the creation of the provinces in 1833 it passed to that of Salamanca, in the partido of Peñaranda de Bracamonte. Its church of San Pablo Apóstol holds 16th-century paintings and an 18th-century altarpiece.
Arconada, the land of the boundary markers
Curiosity
The place name appears as Archonata in 1244 and Arconada in the fifteenth century: it derives from arcón, a diminutive of arca with the sense of a stone marking a boundary. The present form arose from a folk etymology that associated it with the falcon.
The festivities of San Bartolo
Activity
The municipality holds its two local festivals on 29 June and 24 August, the day of San Bartolomé, whom the residents familiarly call San Bartolo. Its 130 inhabitants are divided between the two settlements that make up the municipal district.
