What to see and do in Nava de Sotrobal

Nava de Sotrobal
Village
Nava de Sotrobal is a municipality of about 145 inhabitants in the comarca of the Tierra de Peñaranda, in the province of Salamanca, which takes its second name from the deserted village of Sotrobal, documented in 1178, whose Romance name means wolves' wood. Founded during the medieval repopulation by the kings of León within the jurisdiction of Alba de Tormes, it was sacked by Castilian troops in 1196 during the border wars between León and Castile. It preserves the church of San Miguel, with its Renaissance wooden gallery. During the Peninsular War it saw the passage of the French troops of Marshal Soult in 1812, and during the Civil War the Arauzo Aerodrome operated in its territory, serving the insurgent side and bombed on two occasions.
The church of San Miguel of Nava de Sotrobal
Monument
Of the original single-nave church only the apse remains. Today it has two naves, a timber frame, a baptistery with eighteenth-century Baroque plasterwork and a popular Renaissance tribune decorated with ovolos, darts and small blind arches.
The Arauzo aerodrome
Historical milestone
The Arauzo aerodrome was a military installation created during the Civil War by the insurgent side, on the Arauzo estate, north-west of the municipality of Nava de Sotrobal, beside the road from Villacastín to Vigo and the river Almar. It had only an unpaved airstrip and several huts for its services. It began operating in late summer 1936, and in October squadrons of Junkers Ju-52s of the Condor Legion, which operated against Madrid, were stationed there; with autumn, the poor condition of the ground forced much of the activity to be transferred to the Matacán aerodrome. It was bombed by Republican aircraft on two occasions, on 30 November and 1 December 1936, and was left abandoned at the end of the conflict.
