What to see and do in Cordovilla

Cordovilla
Village
Cordovilla is a municipality of 105 inhabitants in the comarca of Las Villas, in Salamanca, next to the hamlet of Quinta Florentina, which was reconquered and resettled by Ramiro II of León in the 10th century. In the 13th century it was called Cordoviella and formed part of the quarter of Villoria, within the jurisdiction of Salamanca. The village today lacks basic services such as shops or a bank: its residents depend on travelling vendors, a school bus takes the children to study in Babilafuente, three kilometres away, and for medical emergencies they must go to the health centre in Villoria, five kilometres away along a road that is not easily passable.
The church of Santiago of Cordovilla
Monument
The parish church of Cordovilla, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol, was built at the beginning of the 1970s to replace the previous one; its patron saint gives its name to the main festivals of a municipality that today does not reach one hundred and ten inhabitants.
The dawn Ronda of Santiago
Curiosity
In the early hours of 24 to 25 July, the young men cut poplar branches in the nearby grove and leave them, singing, at the windows where an unmarried girl sleeps; they respond with cured meat, wine and pastries eaten as breakfast.
The festivities of Santiago Apóstol
Activity
On 25 July the village wakes decorated with great green poplar branches for the passing of the apostle's procession. Despite its few households, the festival attracts people from across the comarca and can multiply the municipality's population over those two nights.
The resettlement by Ramiro II
Historical milestone
The founding of the place goes back to the reign of Ramiro II of León (931-951), who reconquered and resettled this stretch of the Tormes valley in the 10th century; in the 13th, already as Cordoviella, it formed part of the quarter of Villoria of the Salamanca jurisdiction.
The poplar grove of Cordovilla
Nature
Some three hundred metres from the houses stretches a poplar grove that supplies the Ronda of the festivals each July. It is the wooded patch of a flat, cereal-growing municipal district, with winters of frost and dense fog and summers of up to forty degrees.
The potato and sugar beet of Cordovilla
Food and drink
The municipality's economy rests on smallholding agriculture that combines cereals, above all wheat and maize, with tubers and roots: potatoes and sugar beet are the irrigated crops that sustain its few households.
