Peñarandilla
Village
Peñarandilla is a village in the Salamancan comarca of Tierra de Alba, with about 171 inhabitants over 12.73 km². It is first documented on 18 December 1217, in a charter of Alfonso IX of León, as Penaranda de Sordos; by around 1244 it is recorded simply as Penaranda, a name to which the diminutive suffix "-illa" was later added to distinguish it from its neighbouring and more populous Peñaranda de Bracamonte. Its founding dates back to the medieval Leonese repopulation, the period to which its Romanesque-Mudéjar-style church belongs, and it remained part of the jurisdiction of Alba de Tormes until passing, in 1833, to the province of Salamanca. Its patron saint is Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, celebrated on 15 August, and a feast is also held on the Sunday after Corpus Christi.
