What to see and do in Villar de Gallimazo

Villar de Gallimazo
Village
Villar de Gallimazo is a municipality of about 192 inhabitants in the Tierra de Peñaranda, Salamanca, which includes the hamlet of Pedrezuela de San Bricho, three kilometres away. Nearby is the Riolobos weir, one of the province's largest reserves for migratory birds. Its first settlement may have been Roman; after the Reconquest it was repopulated by the kings of León, and in 1180 it was taken by the armies of Alfonso VIII, recovered three years later by Ferdinand II of León at Fresno-Lavandera. In 1220 Ferdinand III granted Doña Beatriz Alfonso the privilege of settling it with a hundred colonists exempt from tax. Its brick church of San Pedro ad Víncula displays a large Romanesque-Mudéjar apse; the economy remains agricultural and livestock-based, with cereal farming and the pig industry.
The church of San Pedro ad Víncula and San Felipe
Monument
Church of San Pedro ad Víncula y San Felipe, in Villar de Gallimazo (Tierra de Peñaranda, Salamanca), built in brick, notable for its large Romanesque-Mudéjar apse, characteristic of some churches in the area, and for an ashlar tower of three tiers with six openings for the bells, situated at the foot of the church. It originally had a single nave ending in a semicircular apse, later extended with a second nave. The present altarpiece, of simple tetrastyle design, replaced one from the 17th century. Inside is kept a small wooden processional cross adorned with ovals and palmettes, from the 14th century.
The privilege of the hundred settlers
Historical milestone
A privilege given in Burgos on 3 August 1220 granted Doña Beatriz Alfonso that the place could have a hundred settlers free of all levies, so that it would be better settled; the document was kept in the municipal archive of Salamanca.
