What to see and do in Moríñigo

Moríñigo
Village
Moríñigo is a village in the comarca of Las Villas, in the judicial district of Peñaranda, with 93 inhabitants over just over eight square kilometres. It was called Moronegro when the kings of León repopulated it within the quarter of Villoria, jurisdiction of Salamanca; in the mid-19th century it still had 254 inhabitants. It preserves the church of San Pedro ad Víncula, from the 16th century, and celebrates San Antonio de Padua on 13 June. It is the birthplace of the poet, journalist and scholar Francisco Sánchez Barbero (1764-1819).
The church of San Pedro ad Víncula
Monument
The sixteenth-century parish church of Moríñigo is dedicated to San Pedro ad Víncula, the dedication that recalls the apostle's release from his chains; it presides over the main square of a municipality of fewer than a hundred inhabitants.
Moronegro, the old name
Curiosity
Resettled by the kings of León and incorporated into the quarter of Villoria, the place appears in medieval documents as Moronegro; from that form, through phonetic evolution, derived the present Moríñigo, which the town preserves within barely 8.36 square kilometres.
The feast of Saint Anthony of Padua
Activity
On 13 June, the feast of San Antonio de Padua, the municipality's main festival is held. It is the event that brings back to the village many of the descendants of those who emigrated to Salamanca and Madrid in the second half of the twentieth century.
From 254 residents to 93
Curiosity
Madoz's dictionary counted 254 inhabitants in the town in the mid-nineteenth century; the 2025 register records 93. The figure sums up the demographic collapse of the small cereal-growing municipalities of northeastern Salamanca.
