What to see and do in Moraleja de Sayago

Moraleja de Sayago
Village
Moraleja de Sayago is a village of 300 inhabitants in the comarca of Sayago, province of Zamora. Its name refers to the black mulberry, a tree of old concejo tradition present in the place names of other Sayago villages such as Carbellino, Luelmo or Fresno; the addition "de Sayago" distinguishes the locality from other places of the same name, such as Moraleja del Vino, also in Zamora. The first traces of human occupation date from prehistory, with the finding of an opalised quartz axe. Later, the sites of El Oro and Val de Velasco held settlements from Roman times, probably linked to the calzada that joined Ocellum Durii with Bletisa across the territory. Between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the first documentary references already appear, with the Romance-language toponym Moraleja.

Historical milestone
Bishop Esteban granted a charter of settlement in 1161 applying the charter of Ledesma; in 1185 the jurisdictional dispute between the bishops of Zamora and Salamanca was resolved and in 1254 Alfonso X exempted the place from certain taxes.
