Rollán
Village
Rollán is a municipality of about 317 inhabitants in the Tierra de Ledesma, province of Salamanca. Its name is a local form of Roldán, the surname of the Frankish people who repopulated the alfoz of Salamanca in the Middle Ages. The village preserves the memory of a Vettone verraco (stone boar) from around 200 BC and of two Roman roads, that of Los Mártires and the one linking Ledesma with Cáceres, a period in which the Roman plough made it one of the most important agricultural towns in the area. After the Muslim population was expelled by Alfonso VI in 1085 and Salamanca was repopulated in 1102, it was included in the cuarto de Baños; in 1156 it passed to the Order of Alcántara, to which it paid tribute through the martiniega in exchange for protection. Its coat of arms bears the infante's crown of Don Luis Antonio Jaime, son of Philip V.
The verraco and the Order of Alcántara
Historical milestone
The town belonged to the Order of Alcántara, created in 1156 by knights from Salamanca: it paid the martiniega tax and received military protection in return. The cross of the order still appears in the sinister quarter of the municipal coat of arms.
The hermitages of the Holy Martyrs
Monument
Alongside the parish church of San Lorenzo, the municipality preserves the hermitage of the Cristo del Humilladero and that of the Holy Martyrs San Sebastián and San Fabián, built in the graveyard, as well as the Vettone verraco found in the municipal district.
