What to see and do in Golpejas

Golpejas
Village
Golpejas is a municipality in the Salmantine comarca of Tierra de Ledesma, with around 139 inhabitants, which appears as Golpeyas de la Torre in the charter that Ferdinand II of León gave to Ledesma in 1161, a jurisdiction to which it has been attached since the creation of its alfoz in the 12th century. In the 20th century its tin mines enjoyed some prosperity, worked by the Grupo Minero Golpejas from the sixties until their closure in 1988 for lack of profitability, and left abandoned until they were completely dismantled in 2012. Its church of San Nicolás de Bari, from the 18th century, was built after the collapse of the earlier Romanesque temple and reused two of its columns, one now holding up the pulpit and the other the gallery. A few metres from the village, the Peña de la Mora is a spot of holm oaks and oaks linked to the legend of a beautiful captive Moorish woman who went every morning to comb her hair in the nearby stream.
The church of San Nicolás de Bari
Monument
Built in the eighteenth century after the earlier Romanesque church collapsed, it has a rectangular single-nave plan, a ribbed vault and two reused Romanesque columns: one supports the pulpit and the other the tribune.
The lake of the tin mine
Curiosity
The tin working opened in the sixties came to move a thousand tonnes of ore a day and closed for lack of profitability. In its eighty hectares a lake of bluish water of about three hectares remained, today a place for walking.
