Tabera de Abajo
Village
Tabera de Abajo is a municipality in the Salamanca district of Tierra de Ledesma that divides 97 inhabitants among eleven settlements - Carreros, Encinasola de las Minayas, Padierno, San Román, Tabera de Abajo, Tabera de Arriba, Taberuela, Tellosancho, Teso del Corcho, San Lorenzo and Valdefresno - and three depopulated hamlets, across almost 64 square kilometres. It was founded through repopulation by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, within the cuarto de Baños of the jurisdiction of Salamanca, and appears in medieval documents as Tavan de Moriel; already in the 13th century the hamlet of Tavera de Carreros, now Carreros, existed. In the mid-19th century it had barely 63 recorded inhabitants. It preserves the San Juan Bautista parish church and, in Tabera de Arriba, that of Santiago Apóstol.
