What to see and do in Villarmayor

Villarmayor
Village
Villarmayor is a municipality of about 139 inhabitants in the Tierra de Ledesma, province of Salamanca, whose 39 square kilometres are divided between the settlement of Espino de los Doctores and the depopulated hamlets of Contiensa, Palacios de los Dieces, Peñamecer and Zafroncino. Several dolmens, such as those of El Torrejón and El Guijo, and a Neolithic settlement at Peñamecer attest to settlement since megalithic times, while a Roman fountain and bridge recall the passage of Rome. The present-day village arose with the repopulation of the alfoz of Ledesma, created in the 12th century by Ferdinand II of León. It preserves the San Vicente Mártir church and the Virgen de las Nieves hermitage, whose festival on 5 August is known for the parody that criticises in verse the town council and the year's prominent residents.

Monument
The municipal district preserves the dolmens of El Torrejón and El Guijo, as well as the Neolithic settlement of Peñamecer, an arch of a Roman bridge and a Roman fountain: a concentration of remains uncommon for a municipality of one hundred and thirty-nine households.

Activity
On 5 August the peñas sing the parody, verses that criticise the town council and anyone who has stood out during the year, and one tree is planted per peña; the night is washed down with the Juana, a lemonade heavily laced with wine and other liquors.
