What to see and do in La Mata de Ledesma

La Mata de Ledesma
Village
La Mata de Ledesma is a municipality in the Salmantine comarca of Tierra de Ledesma that brings together 98 inhabitants in five settlements — El Barrero de Porqueriza, Gejo de Diego Gómez, La Mata de Ledesma, Porqueriza and Pozos de Mondar —, founded in the Middle Ages by the repopulation of the Leonese kings within the jurisdiction of Ledesma. It holds a notable megalithic complex: the Chalcolithic site of El Guijo, with ten tumuli, the dolmen of the Gejo de Diego Gómez, which well preserves the hollow of its chamber, and that of El Mesón, in Porqueriza, practically intact. The church of San Miguel Arcángel, in La Mata, preserves a Romanesque doorway. Its patroness is the Virgen de la Asunción, celebrated from 13 to 16 August, with the main day on the 15th.
The dolmen of El Mesón
Nature
In the annexed village of Porqueriza the dolmen of El Mesón is preserved practically intact, one of the best preserved megaliths in the comarca; in Gejo de Diego Gómez there is another that keeps the mound with the hollow of the chamber.
The burial mounds of El Guijo
Monument
The Chalcolithic site of El Guijo is formed by ten megalithic mounds and adds to the ruined churches of Santa Marta and San Antonio Abad to sketch a municipal district dotted with ancient remains and almost empty hamlets.
The festivities of the Assumption
Activity
The patron saint is the Virgin of the Assumption and her festivals run from 13 to 16 August, with solemn mass on the main day; these are the days when the municipality, of fewer than a hundred households, briefly recovers the life of other times.
