Salvatierra de Tormes
Village
Salvatierra de Tormes, with 66 inhabitants, lies in the Salamancan sub-comarca that bears its name, within the comarca of Guijuelo. At the Cortinal de San Juan site, today beneath the waters of the Santa Teresa reservoir, late Roman and Visigothic remains of a Visigothic-era settlement were found. The town arose from the repopulation carried out by the Leonese king Alfonso IX, who in 1203 created the council of Salvatierra and granted it the title of town for its strategic position at the crossing of the Tormes; a fortress was built and the town was walled to defend it. Today it retains part of its medieval wall, the castle known as the Mora Encantada and remains of its old synagogue. It was almost entirely depopulated in the 1950s and 1960s when the Santa Teresa reservoir was built.
