Pelayos
Village
Pelayos is a village in the Salamancan comarca of Tierra de Alba that totals barely 72 inhabitants across 44.40 km²; besides the main settlement, its municipal area includes Cañal, Derrengada-Valhondos, Santa Teresa, Velayos and the deserted hamlets of Romanas and Torre Clemente de Abajo and de Arriba. It was born during the medieval Leonese resettlement and already had its present name in the 13th century, when it was included in the cuarto de Cantalberque of the jurisdiction of Alba de Tormes. Its deserted hamlet of Cañal, however, belonged to the Community of Town and Land of Ávila and to the diocese of Ávila, while the rest of the municipal area remained in the concejo of Alba de Tormes and in the diocese of Salamanca. In the mid-19th century the village had 226 inhabitants, a population that is now much reduced.
