Pizarral
Village
Pizarral is a municipality of 70 inhabitants that forms part of the historic comarca of Salvatierra, in the southeast of Salamanca, between the Tormes and Alagón rivers: a medieval place name that, like all those called Salvatierra, marks an old frontier, in this case the one separating the kingdoms of León and Castile. Its municipal area includes the depopulated hamlet of Torozos, today practically uninhabited. The name Pizarral itself is a transparent epithet referring to the slaty ground of the place, first documented in 1629 as Piçarral. Founded during the repopulation under Alfonso IX, the village celebrates the Virgen del Rosario on 7 October and Santa Bárbara on 4 December.
