What to see and do in Guijo de Ávila

Guijo de Ávila
Village
Guijo de Ávila is a single-settlement municipality of 81 inhabitants, in the Salamancan comarca of Guijuelo, within the sub-comarca of Alto Tormes. It belonged to the Community of Town and Land of Ávila, in the sexmo of Serrezuela, and was for centuries a Castilian boundary marker facing the León-ruled Salvatierra of Guijuelo and the Tierra de Béjar, which passed to the Kingdom of León in the early 15th century: Guijo de Ávila thus remained the westernmost Castilian territory, a wedge surrounded by León lands on three quarters of its territory, a peculiarity that ended in the 19th century when it was integrated into the province of Salamanca. It today houses a Renewable Energy Classroom devoted to environmental education, with information panels and its own weather station.
The Castilian wedge amid Leonese lands
Historical milestone
Resettled from Ávila at the beginning of the twelfth century within the sexmo of Serrezuela, the village remained the westernmost Castilian territory: a boundary marker surrounded on three quarters of its perimeter by Leonese lands, a situation that only ended in the nineteenth century.
The church of Santiago Apóstol
Monument
The parish church of the settlement is dedicated to Santiago Apóstol and gives its name to the main festival of a municipality of 81 inhabitants, whose suffix «de Ávila» recalls the seven centuries in which it belonged to the jurisdiction of Ávila.
The renewable energy classroom
Activity
The municipality has a renewable energy classroom devoted to environmental education, equipped and designed to receive visitors and run teaching activities, an unusual facility in villages of fewer than a hundred inhabitants.
