What to see and do in Cespedosa de Tormes

Cespedosa de Tormes
Village
Cespedosa de Tormes is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of Guijuelo and Alto Tormes, surrounded by the río Tormes, much frequented for sport fishing. It belonged after the Reconquista to the concejo of Ávila and was resettled around 1100 by Raymond of Burgundy, son-in-law of Alfonso VI, maintaining boundary disputes with the neighbouring concejo of Salvatierra well into the 15th century. In 1393 Henry III the Sufferer granted its lordship to Gil González Dávila. The village, formerly called Cepedosa for the heather that abounded in its territory, belonged to the province of Ávila until 1833 and to its diocese until 1959. With about 480 inhabitants, it preserves a watchtower and dances the Palos dance before the Virgen del Carrascal.
The church of Cespedosa de Tormes
Monument
Built in the fifteenth century with masonry and granite, it holds a central altarpiece devoted to the Passion, an articulated Christ facing the entrance and a Christ at the Column of carved and polychrome wood. Its tower houses four bells and the clock mechanism.
The watchtower of the Dávila family
Monument
Built in the fifteenth century with masonry and ashlars at the corners, it is the work of the Dávila family, lords of the town and also builders of the castle of neighbouring Puente del Congosto; it watched over the crossing of the upper Tormes.
The lordship granted by Henry III
Historical milestone
Enrique III the Infirm donated the lordship of the town to Gil González Dávila in 1393. The settlement, resettled around 1100 by Raimundo of Burgundy within the council of Ávila, litigated over its boundaries with the neighbouring council of Salvatierra until the fifteenth century.
Cepedosa, the name of the heather
Curiosity
The old documents and Madoz's dictionary call the town Cepedosa, from cepa, a word used as a synonym for the heather that abounded in these hills; the addition of Tormes came later, from the river that crosses the municipal district.
The stick dance of the Virgen del Carrascal
Activity
The village's most respected tradition is the stick dance with which homage is paid to the Virgen del Carrascal, patron saint of the settlement, during the patron saint festivities; the music is provided by the dulzaina and the tabor.
