What to see and do in Garcihernández

Garcihernández
Village
Garcihernández, with around 410 inhabitants, is part of the Tierra de Alba comarca, alongside El Pardo, La Lurda, Jemingómez and Matamala and other localities that are now deserted. The Vettones left a settlement on the Cuesta de Santa Ana, and a Roman-era villa is documented in the area known as La Serna; the village itself was born from the medieval resettlement by the kings of León, within the jurisdiction of Alba de Tormes, and was called Garci Fernández in the 13th century. It was the scene, on 23 July 1812, a day after the Battle of los Arapiles, of a clash of the War of Independence, when the German dragoons of the King's German Legion caught up with the retreating French troops on the outskirts of the village.
