Fresno Alhándiga
Village
Fresno Alhándiga is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the Tierra de Alba comarca, 33 kilometres from the capital, with the flat Tormes valley to the east and higher ground towards the west. On its territory, in the year 939, the Battle of Alhandega was fought, between the river of the same name and the Cortos ravine, in which the Leonese troops of Ramiro II defeated the Muslims; the king fortified the place, which remained deserted until its resettlement in the 14th century under the name of Fresno. It now has around 195 inhabitants. It preserves the church of San Miguel Arcángel and the hermitage of San Isidro, and celebrates the festivities of the Santa Cruz on 3 and 4 May, San Isidro on 15 May and San Roque in mid-August.
