Village
La Maya is a municipality in the Salamancan comarca of Tierra de Alba, located 35 kilometres from the capital and crossed by the autovía Ruta de la Plata and the N-630 road. Its municipal area, barely seven square kilometres, sits by the Tormes river, which marks the eastern boundary, while to the west hills rise up to 894 metres; the village, beneath a knoll with streets and orchards — among them that of Yuya —, stands at 833 metres. It was founded in the 14th century as Amaya, within the cuarto de Allende el Río of the jurisdiction of Alba de Tormes, and has as its patrons the apostle Santiago and San Blas. It now has around 163 inhabitants.
