What to see and do in Valdehijaderos

Valdehijaderos
Village
Valdehijaderos is a municipality of 84 inhabitants in the Sierra de Béjar, within the Sierras de Béjar y Francia Biosphere Reserve. Its name comes from "Val de Ahijaderos", the meadows reserved for lambing ewes, and the village is arranged around the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental, which led livestock from Valdefuentes de Sangusín towards the pastures of Extremadura; the European long-distance path GR-10/E-7, between Puzol and Lisbon, also crosses its municipal area. In the Middle Ages it depended on the council and marquisate of Montemayor del Río, within the Kingdom of León, and it was a border place with Castile, whose dividing line ran nearby, along the Vía de la Plata, at the level of La Calzada de Béjar. Its church holds a baptismal font of Visigothic origin.
The Roman bridge of La Puente
Monument
Over the San Marcos stream, right on the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental, a Roman bridge is preserved that the residents call simply La Puente. The church of San Juan Degollado also holds a baptismal font of Visigothic origin.
The valley of the ahijaderos
Curiosity
«Ahijadero» is a word that the Academy records as particular to Salamanca: the meadow set aside for ewes to bear and rear their lambs. Val de Ahijaderos, the village's old name, therefore means valley of sheep-rearing meadows.
