What to see and do in Puerto de Béjar

Puerto de Béjar
Village
Puerto de Béjar is a municipality of about 340 inhabitants in the comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, in the province of Salamanca, belonging to the Ruta de la Plata, which guards the passage between the two sub-plateaus through which ran the Roman road linking Mérida with Astorga. In 2001, during works on the A-66 motorway, an archaeological excavation uncovered the road's original paving. This was also evidence of a Roman mansio located at mile CXXXII according to the Antonine Itinerary; the CXXXIII milestone is preserved a mile away, along the Camino Real. The municipal area, with a steep gradient between the 1,635 metres of Peña Negra and the 650 metres of the Malena bridge over the río Cuerpo de Hombre, offers chestnut woods and gorges.
The Roman road beneath the motorway
Monument
An excavation carried out in 2001, occasioned by the motorway works, uncovered the original paving of the road that linked Mérida with Astorga. From the itinerary the milestone CXXXIII is also preserved beside the Camino Real.
The chestnut grove of La Lámpara
Historical milestone
Between May and September 1812 the French burned the village and took away the church lamp over the non-payment of 14,000 reales. To settle the debt the residents handed over a chestnut grove of 44 trees, and the spot has been called La Lámpara ever since.
The Vía Verde de la Plata
Activity
The old Plasencia-Astorga railway line, which ran parallel to the Roman road and was closed to freight and passenger traffic in 1996, became the Vía Verde Ruta de la Plata, officially named the Camino Natural Vía Verde de la Plata since 1993. It forms part of the Red de Caminos Naturales, a programme of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food dedicated to restoring old, disused transport infrastructure for hiking and cycling, and it crosses the municipality of Puerto de Béjar, allowing the passage between the two plateaus to be travelled on foot or by bicycle.
